Apprehension of fugitives from justice papers, 1867-1871.

These papers document Governor John W. Stevenson's role as chief executive in the apprehension and arrest of fugitives from justice. Included are requests to the governor from local officials for extraditions of Kentucky fugitives from other states, warrants on those who jump bail, and rewards to be offered for fugitives. One item is an April 1868 affidavit in which Russellville banker names Coleman Younger as a member of a gang who robbed his bank.

John White Stevenson succeeded to the office of governor in September 1867, upon the death of newly-elected Governor John L. Helm. A Democrat, he served until a few months prior to the end of the term, when he resigned to take a seat in the United States Senate. Stevenson was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1812.
